Alcatel-Lucent’s alternative energy program has been named a finalist in the European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Europe Awards Competition for 2010. Alcatel-Lucent plans to develop wireless telecom base stations powered with alternative energies such as solar, wind, and fuel cells. It brings to market the first mass-produced, alternatively powered, wireless base station solution that can be deployed on a global scale in large volumes and with standard delivery times. The program also includes an alternative energy laboratory to analyze and test the best sustainable solutions for the telecom industry.
The nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions has launched a yearlong campaign to promote renewable energy sales among individuals and businesses. The national campaign, focused around the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, has set a goal of reaching one billion kilowatt hours of new, renewable energy purchases made in 2010.
